Harriet's House is a not-for-profit shelter for victims of domestic abuse. Emergency shelter services are available free of charge to women and their children who are victims of domestic violence, and Non-residential services are available free of charge to all victims of domestic violence. Our staff operates through a team approach designed to help victims of abuse in a relaxed, non-institutional setting. We serve all counties, though primarily Greene, Marengo, and Sumter Counties. Victims of domestic violence are admitted to the shelter if they are in danger or are being threatened with violence and have no safe place to go.

Harriet's House provides weekly support groups for in-shelter and out of shelter domestic violence victims (physical, emotional, and psychological abuse) as well as family members of domestic violence victims/survivors and homicide victims. Separate support groups are held for children of domestic violence victims/survivors. Some of the services we provide are:
  • a 24 hour crisis line
  • Individual and group advocacy.
  • Referrals to other agencies as appropriate.
  • Information and education about parenting, assertiveness skills, dynamics of domestic violence, health issues, legal options and more.
  • Children's services, including individual and group advocacy, education on substance abuse, anger management, communications skills, recreational activities, and personal advocacy.
  • Court advocacy program. which can provide information, referrals, and support related to court proceedings and assistance in filing for a Protection Order or for Crime Victims Compensation.
  • Harriet's House mantains a library of resource materials on domestic violence, and provides education on the dynamics and prevention of domestic violence.
Victims of domestic violence have choices.

If you are not ready to make the decision to leave, try to plan ahead and know exactly where you will go and how to get there. HARRIET'S HOUSE IS ONE OPTION IF YOU ARE IN DANGER. There may be other safe places that you can go. Harriet's House staff will be glad to speak with you over the telphone to offer suggestions, options, establish a safety plan with you, etc. ALL INFORMATION AND CALLS RECEIVED ARE CONFIDENTIAL, and you remain anonymous if you so desire. Finally, domestic violence is a problem that is more widespread than most people think. It poses a serious health threat to many women, men and children. It is important for everyone to be aware of exactly what constitutes abuse and to realize that it is not something that one "just has to live with." You do have choices and options. If you think you may be involved in a relationship that threatens your well-being or that of your children, start the communication process. Talk to someone.
