Senior Citizens Exercise Group

Meets every Monday and Wednesday at 10:00 am at the Theo Ratliff  Activity Center.  On Mondays, the group enjoys dominoes, cards, bingo and other games with a low impact exercise program following. On Wednesdays, they meet for an hour of exercise.

 

Senior Citizens Day Trips

Every other month the Recreation Department offers a day trip for fun and fellowship. These trips range from a day of bowling to an excursion to an area museum or other attraction. Participation fee charged. Contact the office for information on the next trip.

 

Chat ‘n’ Chew

Every other month the Recreation Department offer this luncheon program to test your taste buds at a local or nearby restaurant. Lunch is dutch treat and a transportation fee is charged for out of town trips. Contact the office for more information.

 

Jr. NBA/WNBA Basketball Program

Open to Boys and Girls ages 7-15. The program begins with a camp held during the Christmas Holidays. Basic skills and fundamentals of the game are taught. Schedule varies due to holidays. League play begins the 1st Saturday in January after New Year’s Day and lasts until the last Saturday in February or 8 weeks. Games are played on Saturday mornings at the Theo Ratliff Center.

 

Dixie Youth Baseball - Dixie Girls Softball –Babe Ruth Baseball- American Legion Baseball

Open to boys and girls age 4-18. Registration begins in February. Season begins in April for the younger age groups and in May for Babe Ruth and June for American Legion.  Some 50+ teams provide an opportunity for over 400+ youth to further their skills on the baseball and softball diamonds. Games are played on the three complexes at the Sports-Plex.

 

National Youth Sports Coaches Association Clinics

Clinics are offered for all sports to assist our youth coaches in their efforts to instruct the youth in the sports they coach. This is a mandatory program for all youth coaches.  Baseball, softball, soccer, football, cheerleading and basketball are among the sports covered. Emphasis is placed on teaching good fundamentals and keeping the game FUN and minimizing the pressure to win.

 

Emma Gibbs Summer Arts & Crafts Program

This is a supervised arts and crafts program that is offered every summer beginning in June and continues for 8 weeks.  Hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am till 4 pm. Open to boys and girls ages 6-12.  Program is held at Jones Recreation Center.  Mrs. Emma Gibbs has been employed as Program Supervisor for over 35 summers. A participation fee is charged. Approximately 100+ children participate during the day. This is also a site for the annual summer feeding program.

 

Tiny Tiger Football and Cheerleading Program

This program offers a flag football league for ages 7-9 and contact for ages 10-12. Registration begins in late summer or early fall. Over 100 boys and girls participate in this program.  Registration fees apply.

 

Alabama Youth Soccer Organization

Open to youth ages 4 and up. Registration begins in late summer or early fall. Season usually begins late October or November. Registration fees apply. Over 400 boys and girls participate.

 

Jones Recreation Swimming Pool

Pool opens Memorial Day Weekend through the first week August and on weekends until Labor Day in September. Youth swimming lessons are offered in the morning and general swim is 1 pm -5 pm.  Adult swimming lessons are offered in the evening. Admission fee is charged for swimming lessons and general swim. Theo Ratliff Activity Center

This facility is a multi-use facility and is open year round for all ages.  A variety of programs are offered as well as board games, dominoes, cards, foosball, table tennis, air hockey and of course, basketball.  Computers are available for homework or games. Hours of operation vary.  Check with office (334-289-2200) for time, ages and various programs offered or click on the Theo Ratliff Activity Center heading for detailed information.

 


 

Gaineswood Tennis Courts

This facility is located at the corner of Cherry Ave and Whitfield Street. This site off 4 regulation courts and  1- ˝ court basketball court

Includes swings, slides, sand volleyball court, climbing equipment, picnic tables, spring animals, ˝ court basketball courts
