The Canebrake PlayersNewsletter - July 2002 "You Can't Take It With You" The play had production problems before it was even cast, but, as the theater saying goes, "The show must go on!" And indeed it will. "You Can't Take It With You," one of the most popular plays in Canebrake history, will have its reprise Thursday through Saturday, July 25-27, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, July 28, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.00. Originally scheduled to run two weeks earlier, the play had to be delayed because of director Walter Brown McCord's hospitalization. Instead, Jan Wilburn stepped in competently to direct the veteran cast, all of whom have performed on the Demopolis stage before. Jan has a lot of experience to draw from since she played "Essie" in the first production. This zany comedy of two star-crossed lovers and their families provided lots of laughs, as well as an ovation for the set as the curtains opened when it first played on the Old School Theater stage in 1985. This year's production promises to do no less, with period costumes by Carol Caldwell and a set that reflects the time as well as the wacky characters in the Sycamore family. This is the first "adult" play produced by the Canebrake Players since "Bell, Book and Candle" in August of 2000. Officers hope to begin scheduling a greater variety of productions to appeal to a wide range of audiences in Demopolis.
Annual Canebrake Dinner When:
August 8th, 2002 Once again it's time for the Canebrake Players members to gather and enjoy dinner, talk about the glories and tragedies of past performances, and plan for new ones. Join us Thursday, August 8, 2002, at Ellis V for the annual dinner. We will meet at 6:30 p.m. Call Patty Horton at 289-2858 by August 1 to make your reservations. This is also the meeting to elect new leadership for our little theater group. All the offices have nominees except for the presidency. Kim Townsend, who has held the post for several years, has not accepted the nomination for re-election. Other nominees are Buddy Wilburn first vice president; Jan McDonald, second vice president; Jan Wilburn, secretary; and Braxton and Barbara Spahos, co-treasurers. Denise Meyer will continue in her post as historian and director of the children's summer workshop.
"I'll Be Home For Christmas" As a departure from our usual Christmas production, the Canebrake Players is joining forces with the Demopolis Singers to present the musical, "I'll Be Home For Christmas" for Demopolis' Christmas on the River week. Set in November and December of 1941, the musical combines both acting and singing, comedy and drama. At least three performances are planned, Monday and Tuesday, December 2 and 3, at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, December 7, at 2:30 p.m. All performances will be in the Old School Theater. Look for audition dates to try out for one of the speaking - or singing - roles. Or volunteer to help construct the minimal set, provide props, help with period costumes, work with sound and lighting or ticket sales.
Children's Summer Theater Workshop Once again the Canebrake Players sponsored a summer theater workshop for students. Some 30 young people spent the week of Julyl 15-19 with director Theba Lee Horn learning the ins and outs of make-up, staging, costuming and all the fun of the theater. Thanks goes to Denise Meyer who, as usual, coordinated the program.
